Research shows that one of the most common disappointments on dates is lying on profiles. Why do people embellish reality? Most often, it's due to insecurity. They believe they will only be attractive in an 'improved version,' writes clinical psychologist Seth Meyers for YourTango.
Lying on a profile not only harms trust but also complicates the formation of genuine relationships. Here are three of the most common untruths encountered before a first date:
1. Height
Lying about height is a classic. Men often add a few centimeters, while women may downplay theirs.
"I've heard, for example, many women in my professional and personal life say that they wouldn't date a short guy," writes the expert.
According to a 2022 study, height is associated with power and attractiveness. This creates pressure, especially for men who feel they don't meet expectations.
2. Weight
Many post photos where they look slimmer, or they don't show their full body at all.
"Instead of lying about your weight, do the opposite: tell the whole truth," advises Meyers.
This is a matter of self-esteem, influenced by social norms and media. Overweight individuals often fear rejection. But honesty from the very beginning is a path to self-respect and sincere relationships.
3. Financial Status
Insecurity about work or income leads to embellishing reality. But lies here are quickly uncovered.
"If you don't feel good about your job or income, say so and explain what your plan for change is," he said.
Research confirms that lying about finances is an attempt to compensate for feelings of inadequacy. Such behavior destroys trust before it even has a chance to develop.
"Being honest about who you are is not only for the benefit of the other person - it's also for your own good. Honesty is the best dating strategy that saves time, emotions, and paves the way for genuine relationships," concluded the psychologist.
