What Light Really Ignites: Science vs. Candles and Dimness

Forget about the dim flicker of candles and romantic dimness — these hinder passion rather than enhance it. Research shows that the right lighting can not only change the mood but literally increase the level of arousal.

The first thing many women do before an intimate evening is turn off the lights. However, this is one of the most common mistakes: a lack of lighting hinders physical and emotional contact. Light plays a much more important role than it seems.

According to research from companies specializing in lighting technology, shades of lighting directly affect the perception of a partner and the level of sexual desire. Specialists studied the color schemes of 50 of the most emotional love scenes in cinema to understand which tones elicited the greatest attraction from viewers.

The most arousing was brown light. In most cinematic episodes, warm tones were used, but viewers most frequently noted a caramel-brown shade. This shade appears in iconic scenes from the films "Fifty Shades of Grey," "Game of Thrones," and "Redemption."

However, this color is not the only one capable of igniting passion. Among other stimulating shades were blue, nude, purple, green, red, gray, peach, lilac, and brick. Each of these influences the perception of warmth, closeness, and arousal in its own way.

Research also showed that under brighter lighting, men experience three times more satisfaction, and testosterone levels increase from 2.1 ng/ml to 3.6 ng/ml in just two weeks.

So if you want to bring passion back into your relationship, forget about candles and dimness. True romance is bright, vibrant light with a caramel hue that makes everything around feel warmer, more corporeal, and closer.
