Thanks to new technologies, researchers were able to recreate a whole set of designs.

Scientists studied the mummified body of a woman who lived over two thousand years ago in Siberia and discovered complex tattoos on her skin, miraculously preserved to this day. The ancient designs on her hands and forearms have become one of the most detailed pieces of evidence of the culture of the nomadic tribes in this region.

The research was led by archaeologist Gino Caspari from the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology and the University of Bern. The scientists used infrared and near-infrared imaging to see the tattoos, which had become nearly invisible due to the mummification process. The results of the study were published in the journal Antiquity.

Complex Scenes on Skin

Thanks to new technologies, researchers were able to recreate a whole set of designs. On the woman's hands, simple motifs were found – images of flowers and a bird resembling a rooster. However, the tattoos on her forearms are significantly more complex.

Among them is a scene with an animal resembling a moose being attacked by a mythical creature, as well as an image of a dramatic struggle between horned animals and tigers.

Symbols of Identity

According to the researchers, the tattoos had important cultural significance. The patterns did not overlap and were placed very thoughtfully, which may indicate their role in defining social status or personal identity.

"These findings show how sophisticated these people were," noted Gino Caspari.

How Tattoos Were Made

The analysis also showed that the tattoos were applied using a method of manual skin puncturing with sharp tools or needles. The study involved modern tattoo artist Danny Ridey, who helped recreate the ancient technique.

According to him, the results confirm that the masters of the Pazyryk culture were highly skilled craftsmen – on par with Iron Age artisans who created complex items from wood, leather, textiles, and metal.
