Better UAVs in the Sky than a Rifle in Hand - Latvia Bets on Drones

The potential of unmanned aerial vehicles and their development play an important role in strengthening the capabilities of the National Armed Forces (NAF). A priority role here is assigned to cooperation with local manufacturers; however, some new technologies are also procured abroad, including from Ukraine, which has extensive experience in this field.

It may soon be necessary for the Ministry of Defense to develop amendments to the law that will allow the National Armed Forces to purchase not only aerial but also ground and underwater drones.

It is extremely important for Latvia to develop the capabilities of military drones, stated MP Igor Raev at a meeting of the Saeima subcommittee on comprehensive state defense. Russia has announced that it intends to double the number of drones this year - from 86,000 to 160,000 units.

For the Ministry of Defense, the development and production of unmanned aerial vehicles is a priority, and investments in this area are constantly growing, reported Colonel Intars Berzinsh, head of the remotely piloted platforms department of the Joint Staff of the National Armed Forces, adding that a concept has been developed on how these technologies are implemented, classified, used, and how training is conducted.

Drones are seen as an effective means of supporting the National Armed Forces, integrated into all combat operations: reconnaissance, command, control, and maneuvers. The concept also outlines the directions in which technological capabilities should be at the levels of brigade, battalion, and company, where and how new units are created to perform tactical tasks. Work is currently underway to improve this document.
