Scientists Warn of Powerful Solar Flares by New Year

Solar flares may resume by the New Year.

The Sun may see a resurgence of flare activity by the New Year holidays. Preliminary reports indicate that a magnetic storm could hit Earth as early as December 30, scientists from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory informed.

"On the left edge of the star, two large active regions, identified by bright magnetic loops rising above the horizon, have been gradually coming into view from Earth over the past few days," the scientists noted.

According to the report, the sunspots from which the loops are 'growing' are not yet visible but will come into view within one to three days. It is estimated that both centers of activity will be in a zone of clear visibility just before the New Year celebrations on December 30-31.

It was previously reported that a plasma ejection that left the Sun on December 8 has approached Earth. Some time ago, a second cloud unexpectedly appeared near Earth and struck the planet quite hard, the scientists explained.

Before this, it was revealed that the largest sunspot complex of the current year is crossing the central line between the Sun and Earth, increasing the risk of powerful solar flares.
