Russia has stated that WhatsApp may be completely blocked.
On December 22, there were serious disruptions in the operation of the WhatsApp messenger in Russia. At least 1,600 Russians reported issues. The most complaints came from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Moscow Region, Voronezh Region, Vladimir Region, and Kaliningrad Region, as well as the Republic of Crimea. Reports of slow service were also received from other regions of Russia.
"Roskomnadzor" later provided explanations, stating that it is "systematically introducing restrictive measures" against the messenger.
They added that the restrictions are being implemented gradually, "allowing users to switch to other messengers," and recommended transitioning to Russian services. This means that calls and messages to relatives outside of Russia via WhatsApp will also be blocked.
