The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2025 was awarded to Kitagawa, Robson, and Yaghi.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2025 was awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar Yaghi for the development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These unique molecular structures consist of metallic nodes and organic linkers, forming a porous network with a vast internal surface area. This was reported on the Nobel Prize website.

The frameworks are capable of 'taking in' and 'releasing' molecules like a sponge does with water, making them indispensable in environmental and energy technologies. Today, MOFs are used for extracting water from air, treating wastewater, capturing carbon dioxide, and storing hydrogen. According to the Nobel Committee, this discovery has been a breakthrough that has expanded the possibilities of chemistry and brought humanity closer to solving global environmental challenges.

In 2024, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper for groundbreaking research on protein structures.
