The main favorite of the figure skating competition, Ilya Malinin from the USA, fell twice and finished only in eighth place (264.49) in the men's singles event at the Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Gold was won by Mikhail Shaidurov from Kazakhstan, who was in fifth place after the short program (291.58), silver went to Japanese skater Yuma Kagiyama (280.06), and the bronze medal was claimed by his compatriot Shun Sato (274.90).
Russian figure skater Petr Gumennik, competing as a neutral athlete, finished in sixth place. In total, the 23-year-old Gumennik scored 271.21 points for his short and free programs.
Latvian figure skater Denis Vasiliev placed 18th with 226.46 points.
Another Latvian, naturalized Ukrainian Fedor Kulish, did not make it to the finals, finishing in 28th place.
