On Wednesday, Tallinn honored capital athlete Niina Petrykina, who successfully defended her championship title at the 2026 European Figure Skating Championships; the city awarded the athlete and her coach a cash prize totaling 7500 euros.
According to Mayor Peeter Raudsepp, Niina Petrykina's performances in Sheffield and other competitions demonstrate that a true champion is not just talent, but someone who rises time and again after difficulties, whether they be injuries, pressure, or the weight of expectations. "Dedication, determination, and Niina's ability to navigate challenging situations serve as an example for each of us. The role of the coach is equally important. Mentorship, trust, and professional support have become a solid foundation for Niina's achievements," said Raudsepp.
"Winning a championship title is difficult, but defending it is even harder. Niina Petrykina has proven that she is among the best in Europe, and her gold medal reflects years of hard work and perseverance. Tallinn values the contribution and example of its leading athletes, which inspires young people to set high goals. It is a great honor for us to celebrate the magnificent collaboration between Niina Petrykina and her coach Svetlana Varnavskaya, which brings a sense of pride to our entire city and country," stated Deputy Mayor Monika Haukanimm.
At the European Figure Skating Championships held in Sheffield in January 2026, Niina Petrykina won the gold medal in women's singles, securing her title as European champion for the second consecutive year.
The Tallinn City Government allocated 5000 euros to the athlete and 2500 euros to her coach Svetlana Varnavskaya, acknowledging their dedication and fruitful collaboration.
Tallinn recognizes the high sporting achievements of capital athletes and their coaches at the Olympic Games, World Championships, and European Championships.
