Latvian skier achieves the highest achievement in the history of alpine skiing in independent Latvia

Kranjska Gora (Slovenia), January 4. Latvian athlete Jennifer Germanne finished seventh in the World Cup slalom in Slovenia on Sunday, setting a new record for independent Latvia in alpine skiing.

Germanne, who showed the tenth best result on the first run, started the second run in tenth place and finished first among the athletes who started earlier. Of the next nine competitors, Germanne was surpassed by only six athletes in the combined times of the two runs.

In the combined times of the two runs, the victory was claimed by Swiss athlete Camille Rast, who was the fastest on both runs and finished with a time of 1 minute 40.20 seconds.

She finished 0.14 seconds ahead of American Mikaela Shiffrin, who had won the previous five slalom competitions, while her compatriot Wendy Holdener trailed by 1.83 seconds, rounding out the top three.

Germanne showed the fourth best time on the second run and finished 2.56 seconds behind the winner in the combined times.

The seventh place achieved by the Latvian skier is a new record in alpine skiing for independent Latvia. The only higher finish in the World Cup during the Soviet era was by Germanne's mother, Ulla Lodzinya, who once placed fourth.

In her first competition of the season, Germanne, returning to the World Cup after nearly a year-long break, placed 21st in Finland. In the second stage of the World Cup, the Latvian athlete finished 14th, and in the next two, she finished 10th.

After six slalom competitions, Shiffrin leads the overall World Cup standings in this discipline with 580 points, followed by Rast in second place with 362 points, while Germanne shares tenth place with 116 points.

In the overall standings across all disciplines, Shiffrin and Rast occupy the first and second places, respectively. Germanne is in 31st place.

In the 2024/2025 season, Germanne finished eighth three times in slalom at World Cup stages, and in the final competitions, the Latvian athlete placed 14th.

At the beginning of 2024, Germanne became the junior world champion in slalom.
