Ovechkin Rises to Third Place in Goals in December, Behind Only Gretzky and Howe

On December 28, a regular NHL season game was played between the New Jersey Devils and the Washington Capitals (3:4 OT), in which Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin scored a goal and provided an assist. The goal allowed him to take third place in league history for the number of goals scored in December.

He now has 133 goals in 240 games played in this month. In this regard, he surpassed Steve Yzerman, who has 132 goals in 251 games. Only Gordie Howe (141 goals in 327 games) and Wayne Gretzky (157 goals in 233 games) have scored more than them in December.

Currently, the 40-year-old Ovechkin has 989 goals, including playoff games, and he needs to score 27 more to reach Gretzky's record of 1016.

The Washington Capitals defeated the New Jersey Devils and are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings, with 45 points after 38 games.
