Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs urged the country's residents to spend their summer vacation in Latgale. According to him, this will help support the local business that is facing the consequences of the tense situation in the border area.

Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs believes that this summer, residents of Latvia should consider Latgale as a destination for relaxation and travel. The head of government made this call after his first official meeting with the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, in his new capacity.

According to Kulbergs, support for the region is particularly important now, as border areas are facing additional challenges related to security issues.

The Prime Minister noted that incidents involving drones and the overall tension at the eastern border negatively affect tourism and the operations of local entrepreneurs. He stated that the consequences are felt not only by hotels and tourist facilities but also by farmers and representatives of other sectors.

"It is important for the residents of the region to feel the support of the entire society," emphasized Kulbergs.

The head of government added that he himself plans to spend a free summer day in Latgale with his family.

The topic of regional development and security will be one of the key issues for the new government. On June 27, the cabinet of ministers intends to hold an off-site meeting in Latgale. It plans to consider decisions that should enhance the sense of security for residents of border areas.

According to the Prime Minister, this issue has also been discussed at the European level. During a conversation with President Ursula von der Leyen, the situation was addressed not only in Latvia but also in other European Union countries bordering Russia.

In addition to regional issues, the meeting with the President covered the work of the new government, cooperation with Ukraine, and preparations for parliamentary elections.

Kulbergs reported that next week, a group of Ukrainian specialists in drone technology will arrive in Latvia to share their experience with their Latvian counterparts. The possibility of creating a joint Latvian-Ukrainian enterprise with European funding is also being considered.

President Edgars Rinkēvičs positively assessed the first steps of the new government after the meeting and noted that society expects specific decisions and results from it.

Judging by the Prime Minister's statements, issues of security at the eastern border and support for Latgale will become priorities for the cabinet of ministers in the coming months.
