Министр внутренних дел Янис Домбрава

The new Minister of the Interior learned how Latvian border guards live and work, and then stopped by Daugavpils - to see the police.

The newly appointed Minister of the Interior Janis Dombrova (National Alliance) detailed his first steps in this position on the social network X.

"This year, Latvia is experiencing increasing migratory pressure on the country’s external borders. In May alone, about 2,500 migrants were detained for illegal border crossing. I visited the State Border Guard department in Silene, which has been facing some of the most intense attempts by migrants to illegally enter our country in recent weeks. At the same time, migrants can be aggressive towards our border guards.

To ensure the security of our country and the health of border guards, the State Border Guard has the right to use force if necessary. If needed, we will call for additional support from the National Armed Forces," the minister reported. On his way home, Dombrova decided to stop by Daugavpils - he visited the Latgale Regional Police Department located in the city.

"I met few police officers... but they made a good impression. Alongside their usual police duties, the challenge for Latgale police officers is combating smuggling and transporting immigrants," Dombrova explained.
