The head of the government today signed two decrees. Namely:
"Prime Minister Evika Silina on Sunday, May 10, signed a decree relieving Andris Sprudins of his duties as Minister of Defense.
According to the decree, Andris Sprudins will serve as Minister of Defense until May 11, 2026.
From May 12, 2026, Prime Minister Evika Silina will temporarily assume the duties of Minister of Defense until further notice."
According to legislation, if a minister resigns or is dismissed, their duties are assigned by the prime minister either to another minister or to the prime minister themselves. Evika Silina preferred the second option. Rumor has it that if the government does not collapse and the "progressives" agree to support the candidacy of Raivis Melnis, a vote in the Saeima for the new Minister of Defense may take place next Thursday, May 21 - after Melnis meets with the Saeima factions and the Supreme Commander, that is, the president.
