Preparing for the upcoming autumn elections to the 15th Saeima, the "Progressives" have nominated their co-chair and leader of the Saeima faction Andris Shuvaev as their candidate for Prime Minister.

Shuvaev has been co-chair of the party since November 2024. In September 2023, after the "Progressives" joined the government of Evika Silina ("New Unity"), Shuvaev was elected leader of the "Progressives" faction in the Saeima. Also, since September 2023, he has been the deputy chairman of the parliamentary commission on budget and finance (taxes).

In his speech, Shuvaev emphasized the importance of the upcoming elections for the democracy of Latvia and stated that the country effectively has two paths:

– either a coalition dominated by populists wins, which could jeopardize the democratic and Western course of the state,

– or a pro-European democratic coalition will be formed, with the "Progressives" ready to become its core.

Shuvaev noted that after the elections, Latvia faces three tasks:

  • first, to protect democracy and state foundations, preventing a "revenge of anti-democratic forces";

  • second, to reduce the cost of living, make the economy more resilient to economic shocks caused by the war in Iran, and ensure real energy security.

  • third, in Shuvaev's opinion, Latvia, together with its allies, needs to strengthen its influence.

The Union of Greens and Farmers of Latvia has already announced its candidate for the post of Prime Minister, nominating the chairman of the ZZS, Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis.

The candidate for Prime Minister from the opposition National Alliance in the elections to the 15th Saeima will be Ilze Indrikson.

The party "Latvia First" has nominated Ainars Slesers as its candidate for Prime Minister.
