"It is unlikely that the U.S. will withdraw from NATO." A Saeima deputy assessed Trump's statements

The head of the Saeima's National Security Commission believes that Latvia fulfills its allied obligations and assists the U.S. as much as possible.

As is known, in recent days, the head of the White House, reacting to the refusal of leading European NATO members to support the U.S. military operation against Iran, threatened the withdrawal of America from the North Atlantic Alliance. The head of the Saeima's National Security Commission, Ainars Latkovskis ("New Unity"), reminded in an interview with Latvian Radio that the decision to withdraw from NATO, if it ever comes to that, still needs to be approved by the U.S. Congress, so such a scenario seems unlikely to the deputy.

"We have not opposed the interests of the United States in any way. We are a small country. We are interested in cooperation with the United States, and we conduct our policy accordingly. We treat the United States in this way. Plus, we are one of the few countries fulfilling this agreement, or obligation, which was more or less set as a task by the U.S. for a 5% contribution to our defense. We are among the few, and representatives of the U.S. administration — both the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of State, as well as Trump himself — have repeatedly noted that we are good allies," said Ainars Latkovskis.
