With the headline 'The End of the American Empire,' an article was published in the authoritative magazine New Statesman. Its author believes that the war in Iran heralds the destruction of U.S. authority, rather than its revival as Trump intended.
"Trump's 'tour' turned out to be a march toward disaster. His 'major military operation' transformed from an attempt to block Iran's nuclear potential (which was supposedly 'wiped off the map' last June) into an attempt to unblock the Strait of Hormuz and restore the situation that existed before the operation began. Whatever the goal, the status quo is irreversible. The bombarded military-theocratic dictatorship has begun the final collapse of U.S. imperial power," the article states.
The author notes that Trump was warned about the risks of this operation, but he did not listen.

"The radical consequence is Iran's rebirth as a great power. By becoming the arbiter of passage through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has turned into a decisive force in the global oil economy. If Trump withdraws from the Middle East, the states under U.S. protection will oscillate between neutrality and coalitions with Iran. If he decides to 'see it through' and starts a ground operation, the U.S. will be drawn into a catastrophe surpassing Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq combined," Gray writes.
In his opinion, Russia and China also benefit from the war.
"While Trump reallocates military resources from the Asia-Pacific region to the Middle East, Xi Jinping can absorb Taiwan without a single shot. Putin, in turn, gains leverage in Europe. Trump's 'little tour' has become a point of no return in America's retreat as a global power. Trump can destroy everything he touches, but his status as a world-historical figure is now beyond doubt. Perhaps he is leading America to its own 'regime change,'" the author concludes.
