In the new season, over 300 million euros is planned to be invested in the construction of street, pedestrian, and bicycle infrastructure in Riga, said Kristaps Kauliņš, the director of the Department of Environment and Mobility of the Riga City Council, at a press conference on Wednesday.

This amount includes funding for both previously started projects, the completion of which is planned for this year, and new projects.

This year, it is planned to complete the construction work on the fourth phase of the Southern Bridge, the overpasses in Zemitani and Kundzinšala. At the same time, projects for the interchanges of the Cable Bridge, the Air Bridge, and the overpass on Altonavas Street are planned to begin.

As Kauliņš reported, overall this year, work will take place at more than 200 sites, including the construction of three bike paths - from Imanta to Piņķi, from Plavnieki to the Ropaži region, and along Mukusalas Street towards Kekava. The pedestrian infrastructure will also be improved, the asphalt covering of the streets will be renewed, and local streets will be treated.

The Chairman of the Riga City Council, Viesturs Kleinbergs, stated that active construction work in Riga will begin as soon as the air temperature stabilizes.

The mayor noted that a significant challenge this construction season will be the rising costs of construction work due to the increase in oil prices. For some construction contracts, cost indexing is already provided, while for others, the municipality will seek solutions.

The Chairwoman of the Committee on Communications and Transport of the Riga City Council, Marta Kotello, reported that this year, it is planned to create at least 30 new pedestrian crossings in Riga, and improvements are planned for several existing crossings. It is also planned to enhance road safety near several schools.
