The list of companies continuing trade with Russia and Belarus has not changed significantly compared to the latest published data, said Minister of Economics Viktor Valainis in an interview on the "Morning Panorama" program on Tuesday, LETA reports.
He noted that although the law prohibits publishing such data, the Ministry of Economics has already made this list public twice before, and the latest one is still available on the agency's website.
Valainis also reported that the Ministry of Economics, together with the Ministry of Finance, plans to discuss further steps. "We will see what we can do to address this issue," said the minister.
At the same time, he emphasized that the list has practically not changed. "To a large extent, these are the same companies," he noted, explaining that trade volumes with Russia and Belarus have significantly decreased, and the number of companies has slightly reduced, but overall the situation has not changed significantly.
"In such conditions, the question arises — should we violate the law again or not. This will be a subject of discussion with the Ministry of Finance," said Valainis, adding that in the event of a repeated violation of the law, any company from the list could sue the state, and in such a case, the state's chances of winning would be minimal, as the data it possesses is not intended for publication.
Currently, the Ministry of Economics' website has a list of companies that exported goods to Russia and Belarus in June 2024.
As previously reported, Prime Minister Evika Silina instructed the Ministry of Economics, together with the Ministry of Finance, to ensure the publication of a list of companies registered in Latvia that trade with Russia and Belarus no later than Tuesday.
The head of the "New Unity" faction in the Saeima, Edmunds Jurēvics, emphasized that targeted work is underway to terminate economic ties with the aggressor states, and disclosing such information is not a punishment, but an honest attitude towards society.
In "New Unity," they also believe that this is a necessary step to sever economic ties with Russia and Belarus. The publication of the list will allow society to better understand which companies continue to do business with aggressor states despite the current geopolitical situation.
Earlier, the opposition National Alliance submitted a proposal to the Saeima to publish a list of importers and exporters — companies that continue transactions with Russia and Belarus.
The proposal stipulated that the Prime Minister should ensure the publication of such a list by March 29, 2026.
The National Alliance reminded that in 2023, a similar list was already published at the initiative of the then Minister of Economics Ilze Indrikson. After the change of government, the current list of companies is no longer available, the party noted.
