The leader of one of the opposition forces called on the President of Latvia to take active actions.
The latest rating of political forces showed a dramatic decline in the popularity of the ruling parties. The head of the parliamentary opposition faction of the United List, Edgars Tavars, published an extensive comment on social media, calling on Edgars Rinkēvičs to change the government before the elections.
"The President of Latvia should think not about Easter traditions this Easter, but about creating a transitional government. Currently, when according to the latest SKDS ratings, the overall support for the ruling parties is only 17.5%, the President of Latvia should not be occupied with Easter symbolism and ceremonial phrases. This is not the time for decorative politics. This is the time for action – to take the initiative and initiate the creation of a new transitional government before the elections.
The problems in the country have become too acute to simply try to stretch them until October.
In fact, there is hardly any area where serious systemic problems are not visible. AirBaltic is balancing on the edge, and a critical scenario could unfold at any moment. Instead of timely launching the legal protection process and introducing strict financial discipline, the government continues to buy time. Rail Baltica has been an example of chaos for years – without clear responsibility and control.
At the same time, decisions are being promoted that raise justified questions about state priorities. For example, the idea of buying minority stakes in LMT and TET for about 600 million euros at a time when there is not enough money for healthcare, security, and regional development.
The project for the new Stradiņš hospital building has become a symbol of incompetence – "mistakes" amounting to tens of millions of euros, with no political accountability. The IT sector is shaken by criminal scandals, and public concerns about election security are growing. Even critical infrastructure, including the 112 system, too often faces violations.
In the field of security, the state's response is also too often delayed. Even warnings from cellular broadcasting about potential threats are only launched under public pressure, rather than as timely and responsible actions.
At the same time, the cost of living is rising, energy challenges are becoming more acute, and public trust in the state continues to decline. This is no longer just dissatisfaction with the government – it is a crisis of trust in the state as a whole.
In such a situation, the question is not about political gain. The question is about the country's ability to act.
Therefore, the solution, in my opinion, is obvious – Latvia needs a transitional government before the elections. A broad and capable government focused on achieving specific tasks, rather than on political survival in the run-up to the elections on October 3.
There are still important things that can be done: immediately introduce financial discipline and, if necessary, start the legal protection process for airBaltic; conduct a complete audit of the Rail Baltica project and identify those responsible; stop unjustified and costly deals that do not meet state priorities; in healthcare, cease the waste of public funds; strengthen the checkpoints on the eastern border as security infrastructure, rather than subjecting them to the formal requirements of the "green course"; reduce bureaucracy and restore accountability in public administration; and, most importantly, develop a balanced budget for 2027 and submit it to the Saeima on time.
These are specific tasks that can be started immediately.
The remaining months before the elections could be crucial for the security, economy, and public trust in Latvia. Leaving everything to chance means consciously allowing the situation to worsen.
Of course, there will be arguments that it would be politically beneficial for the opposition to allow this government to continue working until the elections, as the entire opposition is only increasing its ratings. But the interests of the state cannot be subordinated to political tactics.
Therefore, a new, broad, and energetic transitional government is now necessary, which includes the United List and the National Alliance, adopts a crisis government declaration, and focuses solely on results. And not because it would be politically beneficial for someone, but because Latvia needs it.
And this is a step that the President of Latvia can and should initiate now," Edgars Tavars wrote.
