It has been two months since the resignation of the chairperson of the Adazi council, Karina Mikelsone, but the deputies have not yet agreed on a new head of the self-government, writes Latvijas Avīze.
Currently, his duties are being performed by the deputy mayor, Gatis Miglans, who may become a candidate for the chairperson position; however, his election is complicated by the inability of the deputies to agree on the coalition composition. Disagreements may also arise regarding other positions - deputy mayors and committee chairs.
Miglans has invited all 15 deputies of the council to negotiations and wants to conclude them before the next council meeting on March 26, when deputies are expected to elect a new chairperson. If the council does not elect a new mayor within two months, the Minister of Smart Governance and Regional Development may initiate the dissolution of the council. However, the deputies of the Adazi council remind that there has already been a precedent - the council of the previous Jelgava region worked without a chairperson for five months, during which the situation was even more critical, as the mayor had only one deputy.
In the Adazi council, there are two deputy chairpersons, one of whom is currently leading the council, while the other can replace him if necessary. The then Minister of Smart Governance and Regional Development, Inga Berzina, was not in a hurry to initiate the dissolution of the Jelgava regional council, as the deputies were gathering for meetings, making decisions, and the functions of self-government were being performed. But back then, there was less than a year until the municipal elections, whereas now there are more than three years. Miglans noted that the Adazi council is managing all its responsibilities, in particular, it has managed to agree on the self-government budget.
Mikelsone resigned from the chairperson position in early January after a number of deputies proposed to revise the self-government budget for this year during a finance committee meeting, as it did not provide equal treatment for the territories of the former Adazi and Carnikava regions, which merged into the united region.
