Deputies are dissatisfied with Evika Silina's too slow response to the geopolitical situation and the demographic crisis.

As previously reported, Prime Minister Evika Silina today addressed the Saeima with a report on the results of her government's work. The debate on this report has been ongoing for almost 5 hours (including breaks). The opposition has harshly criticized the head of government.

"The Prime Minister Mrs. Silina has a very bad quality that costs all of Latvia dearly — it takes her too long to understand. To sever trade ties with Russia in the fifth year of war? In the fifth year of war! Bravo! Bravo! It took two years to stop the export of copper ore. It took a year to realize that Brishkens was not the best choice for the Minister of Transport.

Sorry, Kaspars, I understand that it is very difficult to criticize and manage your own creation. But what will ultimately be built within the Rail Baltica project? Two years have passed, and we still do not know. Manipulations in the construction of the Stradins hospital building. That's an additional 100 million. And nothing has been built yet. Although, according to the timeline, the building should have already been commissioned... In the fifth year of war, only now are 500 shelters planned. Planned, but not built! So they are only recorded on paper. … Silina continues to do what Karins started - irresponsibly managing the country in debt with a maximum budget deficit. They have forgotten that this is no longer free money; it will have to be repaid by future generations.

And the transit with the aggressor Russia is not interrupted, the rails are not dismantled… The air defense against the Shahed drones is not ready. Just like the Persian Gulf was not ready. And the difference between the Persian Gulf and us is that they have the money to buy these technologies from Ukraine," stated Saeima deputy Andris Kulbergs.

Deputy Linda Matisone reacted to the Prime Minister's recent statement: "I was puzzled by what the Prime Minister wrote on social media X: 'The birth rates are not as low as everyone is scandalizing compared to the average European level.' And if Mrs. Silina were in this hall, I would tell her that Latvian families do not need comparisons with other countries; we only need to analyze our own data. And they are dramatic: the total fertility rate has decreased from 1.61 children per woman in 2018 to 1.23 in 2024, and in 2025 it will be even lower, representing the lowest birth rate in the last hundred years in the history of Latvia. This is a dramatic decline. This is a troubling signal for the entire country. And colleagues, these are not just numbers; this is the future of our country, because if nothing changes, according to Eurostat forecasts, Latvia will have one and a half million residents in 2040, and in 35 years, the population of Latvia will be less than that of Estonia. We are losing 18,000 people every year. That is an entire city that disappears from the map of Latvia every year, every year like Kuldiga, like Olaine. And this is no longer a question of demographics.

This is a question of the country's survival. And this demographic crisis will have very concrete consequences. Thirty years ago, one pensioner in Latvia was supported by almost six workers. In 2040, there will be only 2.2 workers for one pensioner. And very simple questions arise here: who will work? Who will earn taxes? Who will pay pensions? Who will support this country at all? Such statements about this, that the birth rates are not so low, are irresponsible.
