The leadership of the party alliance “New Unity” believes that since the European Union (EU) has been unable to agree on another package of sanctions against Russia due to the veto of several EU countries, decisions to cease economic ties with Russia must be made at the national level, the party reported.
According to the party, Latvian entrepreneurs should cease import and export with Russia by the end of 2026.
Prime Minister Evika Silina (“New Unity”) will instruct the Ministry of Economics, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare a detailed analysis and plan for stopping passenger transport to Russia and introducing a ban on the retail trade of goods of Russian origin in Latvia by the end of March.
The Ministry of Transport will be tasked with preparing a detailed analysis of the flow of railway cargo to Russia and proposals for its cessation.
The ministries must develop specific proposals and necessary changes to regulations.
As reported, another coalition party previously suggested that the Ministry of Economics develop a plan to cease trade with aggressor states.
In turn, more pragmatic nationalists propose imposing a 30-percent tariff on trade with Russia. However, the National Alliance is in opposition – they are unlikely to be heeded.
