Russian historian and North Korea specialist Andrei Lankov, who was detained by law enforcement during a lecture in Riga on Tuesday evening, has been expelled to Estonia, LETA reports citing the Associated Press (AP).
According to the agency, on Wednesday, Lankov reported in a text message that the Latvian police did not specify the reason for his detention, after which he was handed over to immigration authorities and then taken to the border with Estonia.
"Essentially, they expelled me from the country, and that’s it," Lankov wrote in the message, who is a citizen of Russia and Australia.
The broadcasting organization "Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty" (RFE/RL) reports that Lankov had a lecture scheduled in Tallinn on Wednesday.
Lankov is a North Korea specialist, a Doctor of Historical Sciences, and a professor at Seoul's Kookmin University. A Russian court imposed a fine on him for activities in a so-called undesirable organization.
