Sometimes You Have to Bang Your Fist on the Table

A political scientist on how to act during elections and after them.

I am a cynical voter. In the sense that I look out for my own interests. And I advise any voter to do the same. Because democracy is about representing interests,” explains political scientist and professor at the University of Latvia, Jānis Ikstens, in an interview with santa.lv.

"Those who are guilty of something (politicians - ed.) do not really get punished. Unfortunately, this is still a distinguishing feature of our politics.

However, on election day, nothing ends; on the contrary, everything is just beginning. As a society, we must keep an eye on what politicians are doing. In fact, they need to be managed. Questions must be asked, and we should inquire why they acted in a certain way. In a democratic situation, politicians cannot be left 'alone' to act on their own. We need to express our (as voters - ed.) wishes to politicians – not timidly or shyly, but firmly, and if necessary, banging our fists on the table. After all, politicians have their own considerations, conveniences, perceptions, and stereotypes in which they operate," says the political scientist.
