On the Path to Population Decline: Birth Rates in Latvia Have Fallen Again

Birth rates in Latvia have fallen by almost 10% in just one year.

Last year, 11,637 children were born in Latvia, which is a decrease of 9.7% or 1,250 fewer than in 2024, according to preliminary data from the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB).

The highest number of births occurred in the third quarter - 3,223 children, while the lowest was in the fourth quarter - 2,754 children.

In July, August, September, and October of last year, more than a thousand children were born each month, which had not happened since October 2024. In the remaining months of the year, the number of births did not exceed a thousand.

Last year, there were 25,677 registered deaths - 984 or 3.7% fewer than the previous year. The number of deceased decreased the most in the first quarter of 2025, with 586 fewer deaths, but slightly increased in the third quarter, with 66 more deaths compared to the same quarter in 2024.

As a result of negative natural growth, the country's population decreased by 14,000 people last year and was preliminarily estimated to be 1.823 million on January 1, 2026.

Last year, 10,683 marriages were registered, which is an increase of 4.7% or 478 more marriages than in 2024. The highest number of marriages was registered in the third quarter - 4,696, while the lowest was in the first quarter - 1,417.
