The majority of parliamentarians today rejected the expression of no confidence in Prime Minister Evika Siliņa initiated by opposition parties, LETA reports.
Forty-eight deputies voted against Siliņa's resignation, thirty-nine voted for the expression of no confidence, and one independent deputy abstained.
Considering that a quorum was not secured at the previous Saeima meeting, the parliamentarians had to vote again today on the demand for Siliņa's resignation.
Last week, at the Saeima meeting, forty-six coalition deputies voted against Siliņa's resignation, one deputy abstained. The remaining deputies preferred not to participate in the vote.
A quorum was not secured, so a break was announced at the Saeima meeting.
The Saeima consists of 100 representatives of the people, or deputies. According to the Satversme and the regulations of the Saeima, parliamentary meetings can only take place with the participation of at least half of its members, that is, 50 deputies, which is the minimum number for a quorum.
The resignation was demanded in connection with the "demand for the acceptance of migrants in Latvia," the "actual failure of political oversight" over the Rail Baltica project, as well as the "weak indicators of the country's economic development."
As previously reported, Siliņa has already survived a demand for resignation due to the allocation of state funding for the creation of public media content in the Russian language.
At that time, eighteen Saeima deputies voted for the expression of no confidence, while forty-eight did not support the Prime Minister's resignation. Fifteen deputies did not participate in that vote.
