The government has a chance to significantly increase its popularity. Will Silina and Co. take advantage of this opportunity?
Returning from the Olympic Games opening, Evika Silina will lead a coalition meeting this afternoon. The main agenda item is how the government will assist (if at all) residents in paying their heating bills. These bills for January and February are expected to be astronomical, considering the unusually cold weather.
It is anticipated that the Minister of Economics, Viktor Valainis, will present his plan for supporting the population, which goes "beyond" the usual housing allowance paid by municipalities to those classified as low-income or underprivileged.
It can be assumed that alternative proposals will also be presented at the meeting. However, one thing is clear - any options will require additional funding from the state budget.
The authorities do not have much time to make a decision - Latvians will soon receive their bills for January.
The coalition may also discuss the situation regarding the financing of Rail Baltica again. Tomorrow's Cabinet meeting is scheduled to consider a report on the financing of the railway embankment as part of the implementation of the project of the century.
Another discussion is expected on when to include in the government agenda the controversial proposal from the Ministry of Finance to bring non-banking financial companies under the supervision of the Bank of Latvia. It should be noted that the Ministry of Economics opposes hasty decisions in this regard.
