Another 19 kilometers of the southern section of the main route of the "Rail Baltica" project have been handed over for construction, bringing the total to over 30 kilometers, representatives of the national project executor LLC "Eiropas dzelzceļa līnijas" (EDzL) reported.

EDzL and the highway builder "ERB Rail" signed an act to commence construction works under the next three construction permits for 19.62 kilometers, and work on the main route can begin in this section.

Initially, these three construction permits will be used for carrying out major works such as forest clearing, stump removal, and unexploded ordnance scanning. A railway embankment, access roads, culverts, and drainage systems will also be constructed.

According to EDzL, there are a total of 11 construction permits in effect for the southern section of the "Rail Baltica" highway, which is 45 kilometers long from Misa to the border with Lithuania, meaning there are 11 small and large construction sites. Currently, work is underway on seven construction permits with a total length of over 30 kilometers, where major works and embankment construction will take place.

Since the beginning of the year, preparatory works on the southern section of the highway have been carried out under the first four construction permits, covering a length of 11 kilometers. Of the 250 hectares required, approximately 116 hectares of future railway land have been cleared, and about 84 hectares are in the process of being cleared.

At the same time, scanning for unexploded ordnance in the area of the first four construction permits has been completed, and by early December, 100 explosive items were found and neutralized, reports EDzL.

It has already been reported that, according to "RB Rail", the cost of the first phase of "Rail Baltica" in the Baltic countries may amount to 14.3 billion euros, including 5.5 billion euros in Latvia; however, savings of up to 500 million euros are possible through the optimization of technical solutions, as well as other types of savings.
