The European Commission strongly condemns the US decision to impose travel restrictions on five European citizens, including former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton. This is stated in the European Commission's statement.
The European Commission stated that freedom of expression is a fundamental right in Europe and a shared core value with the United States and other democratic countries around the world.
"The EU is an open, rules-based single market that has the sovereign right to regulate economic activity in accordance with our democratic values and international commitments," the statement said.
They reminded that European digital rules ensure safe, fair, and equal conditions for all companies, applied fairly and without discrimination.
"We have reached out to the US authorities for clarification and continue to engage in dialogue. If necessary, we will respond swiftly and decisively to protect our regulatory autonomy from unjustified measures," the European Commission stated.
As reported by bb.lv, the Trump administration imposed visa sanctions on former European Union Commissioner Thierry Breton and four other individuals for attempts to compel American technology companies to control political speech on their platforms.
The EU and the White House have repeatedly clashed over freedom of speech and technology regulation, and the social network X, founded by Trump ally Elon Musk, was fined 120 million euros earlier this month for violating EU content moderation laws.
An EU representative denied that this move was related to censorship, stating that it was aimed at ensuring transparency.
