The Latvian National Security Council demands to seize $300 billion from Russia and give it to Ukraine by the end of the week

Today, December 17, under the leadership of Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, a meeting of the National Security Council took place at the Riga Castle, bb.lv was informed by the president's office.

The meeting discussed current international events related to efforts to achieve a fair and sustainable peace in Ukraine, diplomatic negotiations among the leaders of the USA, Ukraine, and Europe in various formats, including work on developing security guarantees for Ukraine.

The Latvian Council agreed that it is crucial to make a decision at the European Union Council meeting on December 18–19 regarding the use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine as an important step in the further process.

It is worth noting that approximately $300 billion belonging to the Russian Federation is currently frozen worldwide, including $200 billion held in Belgium.

The National Security Council also heard a report on the military strengthening of Latvia's eastern border. During the discussion of this issue, Major General Kaspars Pudāns, the Commander of the National Armed Forces, and General Guntis Pujāts, the Chief of the State Border Guard, were also heard.

The Council assessed the progress made so far and the challenges in implementing mobility countermeasures as part of strengthening the Baltic defense line, as well as the next steps, inter-agency cooperation, and communication with the public in the eastern border areas.

At the National Security Council meeting, reports from security agencies on the current situation were also heard.
