Can we reconcile now? Perhaps the ruling party has changed its mind about dismantling the current government

When this material was being prepared for publication, the coalition partners were just gathering for a very important meeting – they were to discuss further work "after the budget."

But there’s still a lingering feeling

Let us remind you that the government has been in turmoil since the end of September – the "shaking" in power was initiated by the "green farmers," who joined the opposition's initiative to withdraw Latvia from the Istanbul Convention. Then, two deputies from the same Union of Greens and Farmers, along with the opposition, voted for a vote of no confidence in Minister of Transport Aitis Švinka from the "Progressives" party. Švinka, with the hot support of his party members, had previously hastily shown the "green farmers" a three-finger gesture in response to a request to write off the debts of the Ventspils port.

The "Progressives" continued to "take revenge" on the "green farmers" by filing a complaint with the Prosecutor General's Office regarding the Ministry of Agriculture's decision on state support for private woodworking businesses. Even if the "Progressives" reconcile with the "green farmers" now, there will still be a lingering feeling. And the complaint to the prosecutor's office cannot be withdrawn... The process, so to speak, has begun.

No one is new here

But there is political logic – the "old" government collapses at the moment when there are at least preliminary agreements on the model of the new government. So far, there are no such agreements in sight! Firstly, it makes sense for the "rebels" in the form of the "green farmers" to dismantle this government and create a new one only if they can lead the new one. Otherwise, why would they help their direct competitors – the United List, the National Alliance, and "Latvia First"?

Secondly, the opposition has no particular reason to rush into power right now – with 10 months until the elections, it is much more convenient to sit in opposition and ruthlessly criticize the government, especially since there are all grounds for that! The burning issues facing this government have not been resolved with the adoption of the budget.

Does this mean that the Siliņš government is "doomed" to work until the elections? In politics, no one gives any guarantees. If the ratings of the "green farmers" continue to decline, then one of the leaders of this coalition may falter... Especially considering that in the 2026 budget, the "green farmers" could not secure any special gifts for their voters.

In any case, the election campaign is already in full swing and it won’t be boring!
