Suicide barriers won't help - Deputy Mayor of Riga

After the tragedy on the Daugava waterfront, when a car drove into the river, there is a discussion in Riga about whether metal barriers near the Stone Bridge can prevent such incidents. The Deputy Mayor of the capital acknowledges: they won't save from intentional entry into the water, but they can protect against accidents when a car mistakenly ends up in the river.

After the tragic incident on the Daugava waterfront in Riga, when a woman drove her car into the river, the chairwoman of the Riga City Council's Transport Committee stated that metal barriers should be installed at this location near the Stone Bridge, as this is not the only such case. Whether the street infrastructure in this area needs to be changed in some way was a question posed to the Deputy Chairwoman of the Riga City Council on the TV24 program "Ziņu TOP. Rīga runā".

"The real question is: why did this car drive into the river? If it was some kind of intent, as we have heard in the media, then the barriers are unlikely to help," he says.

He recalls another case: "In one instance, the handbrake was not applied on a car, and it rolled into the Daugava by itself — in such situations, barriers could indeed help."

Therefore, the official believes it would make sense to install such barriers in case similar incidents occur unintentionally. "If someone is trying to drive in there deliberately, then the barriers are unlikely to help," concludes the Deputy Mayor of Riga.

However, there are different types of barriers, we would add.
