The UN conference on the rights of national minorities learned about the situation regarding the rights of Russian speakers in Latvia.
Today, the head of the parliamentary faction "Stability!" Svetlana Chulkova arrived in Geneva, who, in the absence of the party leader Roslikov (who has been banned from leaving the country), was invited to give a short talk about the situation of Russian-speaking Latvians. The hearings took place as part of a conference on the rights of national minorities organized under the auspices of the UN office in Geneva.
The Saeima deputy reported that the ruling majority in our country has launched a large-scale offensive primarily against the Russian language - as a result, there are no longer any schools in the country, including private ones, with Russian as the language of instruction, the Russian language has been removed from ATMs, a decision is being prepared to ban the use of Russian in state and municipal institutions, national radicals are proposing that the parliament adopt a declaration that would restrict the use of the Russian language in public spaces, and an amendment to the law has been supported in the second reading that will prohibit teachers from communicating with students in their native language, as well as prohibit educators from communicating with each other in their native language.
"We categorically disagree with such a policy! A third of the country's population, that is, those who consider Russian their native language, also have the right to respect and dignity," stated S. Chulkova.
