Former mayor of Jūrmala Gatis Trukšnis (Latvian Green Party, LZP) was elected chairman of the new strategic planning committee on Monday.
On Monday, the first meeting of the committee took place, where Trukšnis was elected as its chairman, and Ligita Mazinī (LZP) as his deputy. The committee also includes deputies Boris Donnikov ('Latvia First'), Rita Sproge (Union of Greens and Farmers), and Andris Čudars (National Alliance).
Trukšnis stated that there should be a unified vision for the city's development to provide the residents of Jūrmala with a clear understanding of how the city is evolving, and therefore, the development of a new long-term development strategy will begin in the near future.
As reported, the opposition in the Jūrmala City Council previously expressed concerns that the committee was created specifically to appoint Trukšnis to a new paid position, after he was forced to resign due to not receiving security clearance. The opposition reminded that previously, when Trukšnis lost his mayoral seat, a position as an advisor to the chairman of the council was specially created for him.
Opposition representatives noted that there are already too many committees in the council, and there is no clarity on what specific issues the new committee will address.
The municipality explains the creation of the committee as a necessity to ensure coordinated and purposeful long-term development of the city.
It is estimated that the new committee's operations, including the chairman's salary, will require around 23,000 euros per year.
