Artificial intelligence (AI) transforms how people make decisions, stated Janis Sarts, director of NATO's Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence ("Stratcom"), at a forum held today at the Riga Castle dedicated to the impact of AI on state competitiveness, security, and public governance.
He noted that AI influences the formation of perceptions of reality much more than any social networks. According to Sarts, there are several studies showing that artificial intelligence can persuade people more effectively than humans themselves. "Of course, top-class experts would surpass AI, but it is still very convincing," Sarts said.
He also noted that people use AI as a model for relationships. There is already data showing that people literally fall in love with artificial intelligence systems. "They form a deep attraction, and this is happening right now," Sarts stated. In his opinion, this indicates that the potential influence of AI will only grow.
Sarts emphasizes that democratic societies that depend on the free flow of information are susceptible to this influence. Countries like Russia or China view AI as a tool capable of ensuring control over the population, he added.
According to the expert, the future foundation of information infrastructure will not be social networks or the internet, but AI itself: "Ultimately, each of us will have our own AI systems that will lead us to an understanding of the world."
It is now important to understand how to prepare for effective interaction with AI, Sarts emphasized, noting that this is the issue that causes him the greatest concern.
