It is hard to imagine that Ukraine could now agree to the proposed US plan for ending the war, as it includes only Russian interests, said Inara Murniece (National Alliance), a member of the Saeima and chair of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee, to the LETA agency.
In her opinion, the peace plan consisting of 28 points currently on the table reflects only Russia's demands, and Ukraine's position is not properly taken into account.
Murniece emphasized that, according to publicly available information, this plan is based on negotiations between Russia and the USA. In her view, it should be considered that Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is heroically defending itself in this war, so any peace plan must be fair and sustainable.
She reminded that she has met with several high-ranking Ukrainian officials, including President Zelensky, and, considering their words, it is hard to imagine that Ukraine would agree to a plan that involves renouncing NATO membership or significantly reducing its army. The Ukrainian side has already made it clear that it does not agree with such a plan, Murniece added. Murniece believes that such a plan should be worked on not only by Russia and the USA but also by Ukraine, the European Commission, and EU member states. She expressed regret that negotiations have not yet been held, including with Ukraine, as the current plan does not guarantee a fair and lasting peace.
She stressed that peace negotiations must continue so that the aggressor does not benefit from the war it has unleashed and so that Ukraine can continue its recovery.
From the leaked draft that has surfaced in the press, it follows that the proposed US plan for ending the war in Ukraine includes not only keeping the occupied territories under Russian control but also Ukraine's commitment not to join NATO, a refusal to expand the alliance, and Russia's return to the G8.
Kyiv must also abandon the idea of deploying Western peacekeepers in Ukraine, although European military aircraft will be stationed in Poland to protect Ukraine.
