The government may collapse even before the budget. Political scientist makes grim forecasts for Prime Minister Siliņa

The Istanbul Convention may prematurely 'bury' the current government.

Political scientist, lecturer at the University of Latvia, Lelde Metla-Rozentāle, commented on the situation in the government after the process of Latvia's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention was initiated during a live broadcast on Latvian TV. "In fact, the 'green farmers' have moved to the opposition, and the situation with Siliņa's government has become critical," the expert noted. In her opinion, while it seemed not long ago that despite ideological disagreements and disputes surrounding the convention, the coalition would still manage to adopt the budget, there is now a growing sense that the government may collapse even before the budget is passed.

The expert believes that if the Saeima adopts the law on withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention today, the Prime Minister will have to respond in some way - numerous protesters outside the parliament are pushing her towards this. "People are waiting for some kind of reaction; the head of government cannot leave everything as it is," said the associate professor of the University of Latvia.
