How valuable is the property of Russia and Belarus in Latvia?

In Latvia, not only in Riga but also in Jūrmala, Daugavpils, and Liepāja - the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus own several dozen real estate properties, and these are not only embassy or consulate buildings.

So far, the only property that Latvia has taken over for reasons of national security is the so-called House of Moscow. For this, in January 2024, the Saeima adopted a special law providing for the sale of the property at auction, and the proceeds are to be directed to support the Ukrainian community. This autumn, the State Real Estate Agency (VNĪ) held the fifth auction for the sale of the House of Moscow, but without success. At the fifth auction, the starting price of the property was set at 2.142 million euros.

Other properties - 16 Russian and 15 Belarusian - can be conditionally divided into several blocks: embassy buildings in Riga, a consulate building in Daugavpils, a health resort with auxiliary premises in Jūrmala, buildings in the city center, in Daugavpils, individual apartments in Riga, Jūrmala, Liepāja, Daugavpils. The largest properties are the "Yantarny Bereg" sanatorium in Jaunkemeri and the "Belarus" sanatorium in Bulduri.

However, perhaps the most valuable are the historical buildings in the center of Riga, including on Albert Street, which are admired by enthusiasts of the Jugendstil style. The Russian Federation owns buildings 3 and 5 on this street. The Russian Federation (represented by the embassy) owns the building at: 1 Andreja Pumpura Street. The embassy building itself is located at: 2 Ukraine Independence Street. Belarus owns two properties in Riga - the embassy building on 12 Jezusa Baznīcas Street and a large mansion in Mežaparks. Both properties were transferred to it in the 1990s. The mansion at: 7 Ernsta Bergmana Street is a monument of local cultural significance.
