The economist assessed the budget and the situation in the government.
Economist Girts Rungainis critically assessed the 2026 budget project in an interview with TV-3, which has already been submitted for consideration by the Saeima.
"If the government is unstable and weak – such a fragile coalition that is also shaky – then it is difficult for it to make principled choices. And to push through these decisions, even if the largest coalition force understands that this should be done to a greater extent."
Rungainis noted that there are fundamental differences between the coalition parties, which lead to constant friction and, unfortunately, this happens not in the interests of the Latvian people.
"In our coalition, there are 'progressives' who believe that the state should not cut expenses under any circumstances, and that borrowing all the time is good. This is quite justified and should be done as much as possible," the economist says and continues: "And the 'green farmers' believe that expenses should be cut for others, but we will not allow cuts to our own expenses. On the contrary – you still need to write off something and do more," G. Rungainis outlined the situation.
