Silina: It is time for a tougher and more responsible migration policy across Europe Riga, October 16, LETA. It is time for a tougher and more responsible migration policy throughout Europe, said Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina.
In a social media post, the Prime Minister emphasizes that the safety of the citizens of Latvia and the European Union (EU) cannot be compromised due to illegal migration.
Silina proposed to review the principles of migration policy and asylum provision at a European level. In May, joint work on this initiative was launched with the participation of leaders from eight other countries.
"More and more European states are joining our initiative," the politician noted.
Silina reminded that Latvia has been facing pressure from illegal migration for several years and is forced to spend significant resources on securing the external border of the country, which is also the border of the EU.
As reported, the Union of Greens and Farmers (UGF) has appealed to Foreign Minister Baiba Braže to clarify what measures are planned to recognize the special situation in Latvia - similar to that established in Poland. According to the UGF, Poland may soon be exempted from the EU migration pact requirements regarding the redistribution of migrants and related financial sanctions, the association stated in a press release.
In response, Foreign Minister Baiba Braže stated on social media Wednesday afternoon that no exceptions from the migration pact for Poland are foreseen and no relevant decision has been made.
"It should also be noted that these issues fall under the competence of the Ministry of the Interior," the minister emphasized, adding that "misleading messages are being spread not only from Russia but also within Latvia itself."
