Former Saeima deputy is shocked by the 2026 budget proposal and the size of the national debt.
Former Saeima deputy Edgars Jaunups ("For the Development of Latvia") stated in an interview with TV-24 that "a weaker budget was unimaginable."
In his opinion, the ruling party, under the pretext of needing to increase defense spending, has done nothing to reduce, for example, administrative costs and bureaucracy. "Moreover, contrary to promises, the authorities even refused to freeze salaries in the public sector," the politician reminded.
But he is particularly shocked by the pace of borrowing. "Just think: if up until 2022, that is, over nearly 30 years, Latvia borrowed a total of 16 billion, then from 2022 to 2028, considering that a three-year budget is being adopted now, we will borrow 12 billion over 6 years! That means by 2028 we will owe 28 billion! This will lead to very sad consequences!" warned E. Jaunups.
The politician compared Latvia's increasing national debt to a car that first lifts off the ground at full speed and then falls into a swamp. "We will simply climb into such a swamp from which we won't be able to get out ourselves!" the politician is convinced.
