To hold a referendum, about 155,000 signatures must be collected.
Thus, following the relevant decision of the Central Election Commission in Latvia, a petition has begun against the possible privatization of strategically important enterprises. The initiator of the petition for a referendum is the party "Latvia First", which proposed that the citizens of the Republic of Latvia sign in favor of adding the following article to the Satversme: "Only the Saeima may make a decision on the alienation of properties significant to the national economy of Latvia, which include the state joint-stock company 'Latvijas dzelzceļš', the joint-stock company 'Latvijas Valsts meži', the joint-stock company 'Latvenergo', the joint-stock company 'Sadales tīkls', the joint-stock company 'Augstsprieguma tīkls', the state joint-stock company 'Starptautiskā lidosta 'Rīga' and the state joint-stock company 'Latvijas gaisa satiksme'. The decision of the Saeima on the alienation of properties significant to the national economy of Latvia is made at a meeting in which at least two-thirds of the members of the Saeima participate, and a two-thirds majority of the votes of the present deputies is required for approval."
You can sign on the portal "Latvija.lv", as well as at signature collection points in municipalities.
Is this mission feasible? It should be noted that for the Saeima to consider this amendment to the Constitution or for a referendum to be scheduled on this amendment, it is necessary to collect at least 10% of the signatures of the citizens of the Republic of Latvia who have the right to vote, which means approximately 155,000 signatures must be collected.
So far, all attempts to launch a referendum on various issues have failed, as it has not been possible to collect even half of these 155,000 signatures. How will it be this time? The signature collection will last almost a year, until October 14, 2026.
