The Law on the National Guard Will Be Updated: More Latvians Are to Be Allowed to Serve

Members of the ruling coalition have prepared amendments to the National Guard law, aimed at strengthening the country's defense capabilities by expanding opportunities for Latvian citizens to participate in the activities of the National Guard and improving the organization of service, reports LETA.

The amendments stipulate that employees of the Ministry of the Interior, security services, police, prosecutor's office, the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (CPCB/KNAB), and the State Revenue Service (SRS/VID) will also be able to serve in the National Guard.

The amendments also provide for social guarantees — relatives will be able to receive benefits even in cases where the National Guard member dies due to negligence, but not as a result of malicious actions.

The law plans to introduce the status of "supporting the National Guard." Such individuals will be able to provide practical assistance to the National Guard without undergoing active service — for example, in the areas of logistics, radio communication, or data analysis.

At the same time, it is proposed that citizens with dual citizenship will not be accepted for service, except in cases provided for by exceptions in the Citizenship Law.

The authors of the bill explain that the changes contribute to involving society in the defense of the state and strengthen the potential of the National Guard.
