When asked to comment on a survey by the SKDS research center, which indicates that the government and its work often evoke pessimism among the population, Prime Minister Evika Silina responded that governments in Latvia have never been popular.
In her opinion, it is important to work in such a way that the population not only understands but also practically feels the results of its work.
"I do not think that disputes within the coalition increase popularity. I can only continue to work and give hope that those affected by violence in Latvia can receive help from the state," Silina said at a press conference after meeting with President Edgars Rinkēvičs.
The President, in turn, acknowledged that this is a difficult time for governments not only in Latvia but also in other countries, as many complex decisions must be made. He added that there are priority issues that need to be addressed - security and defense.
"However, sometimes decisions that seem obvious in Riga, in border regions, if they are not sufficiently explained, become surrounded by rumors and speculation. Then even a well-founded decision has the opposite effect," Rinkēvičs said.
He listed what concerns society. These are security, demographic situation, condition of roads, and healthcare. According to the President, these issues are not always at the center of political discussions.
"We talk a lot about how to divide and redistribute, but less about how the country can earn and develop. Reducing bureaucracy is one of the issues. Just do not interfere with people and let them work," the President said.
According to the President, the final assessment of the government's work will be given by society.
"The government and the Saeima have another year to show and prove themselves. If you waste this time, do not be surprised by the voters' decisions. Do everything right, and you will get a good result. Everything is in your own hands," the President said.
