Riga Suddenly Remembers Water Transport. Is There Money for It?

Riga needs to develop water transport and create accessible and safe water bodies, said Vice Mayor Maris Sprindžuks at a press conference dedicated to the results of the new composition of the Riga City Council in the first 100 days.

According to Sprindžuks, Riga does not have a unified policy regarding water bodies, so developing one is one of the next tasks for utilizing the potential of the city's rivers and lakes, developing passenger transportation on water, and improving the infrastructure of the docks.

Riga's mayor, Viesturs Kleinbergs, also expressed confidence that creating infrastructure would serve as an incentive for the development of water transport. This can be implemented by both private entrepreneurs and the company "Rīgas satiksme."

Sprindžuks also noted that Riga cannot develop fragmentarily, limited to individual projects or sectors. It is necessary to create a cooperation mechanism between Riga and the surrounding regions that will function as a single organism, especially in the area of traffic organization, and ensure the formation of a quality living environment for residents and entrepreneurs.

"Mobility is not just about roads and buses, but also about the everyday convenience of people and the ability to choose long-term means of transportation. The center of Riga should come alive, becoming a place where people want to live and work," said the vice mayor.
