Former politician Alfred Rubiks revealed that on the day of his 90th birthday, an impressive number of people congratulated him by phone, writes Santa.lv.

"There were almost 90 people. I'm surprised that there is still such interest in me," Rubiks noted.

"I tell everyone — if I've lived to 90, how much longer is it to 100," Alfred Rubiks remarked with a smile in a conversation with the magazine Privātā Dzīve.

On the day of the anniversary, Wednesday, about 30 people came to congratulate him in person. "We had a drink, and I had 100 grams of cognac. I read that a couple of teaspoons of strong drink before bed is even beneficial," the birthday celebrant added.

The celebration continued on Saturday. "I gathered friends and relatives at the restaurant 'Praga'. My great-granddaughter, the daughter of my eldest son's daughter, came from London," Alfred, who can boast four grandchildren, said.

At his age, he still feels full of energy. "When I go to the doctors, they tell me: 'Alfred, you have no problems. Just stones, but they are not age-related. They are from prolonged stress, which we unfortunately cannot cure,'" Rubiks shared, admitting that he lived under immense stress for seven years. "One year before going to prison and six years spent in confinement," he explained.

30 years ago, in July 1995, the Supreme Court sentenced the last leader of the Communist Party of Latvia, Alfred Rubiks, to eight years in prison for attempting a coup.

"For good behavior, I was released after six years. During that time, a completely different country appeared, and I walked the streets not understanding anything," Alfred recalls.

As a pensioner, Rubiks does not complain about his standard of living. "Latvia assigned me a pension of 420 euros, but after working in the European Parliament, I earned, it's even embarrassing to say, — 1800 euros for my pension. In total, I receive more than 2000 euros a month," he admitted, adding that he helps his children and grandchildren financially.
