The majority of the Saeima today rejected the demand of opposition deputies for the resignation of Prime Minister Evika Silina ('New Unity').
The vote of no confidence was initiated by the opposition National Alliance and the 'United List' (OS). The voting took place against the backdrop of disagreements within the coalition itself - between 'New Unity', 'Progressives', and the Union of Greens and Farmers (SZK). Coalition partners promised to work together, at least for now, to adopt the 'security budget' for the next year.
This time, the opposition justified its demand for Silina's resignation by stating that the 'government has long been unable to make clear decisions to terminate economic cooperation with Russia and Belarus.'
'New Unity' has 25 mandates in the Saeima, SZK has 16, and the 'Progressives' have eight. The OS has 13 mandates, the National Alliance has 12, and the 'Latvia First' and 'For Stability' parties have eight each. There are also 10 non-affiliated deputies, some of whom provide Silina's government with a minimal majority in parliament.
