Another disruption of the quorum at the plenary session of the Saeima indicates that the ruling coalition is facing very difficult times.

This was confirmed by veteran Latvian politician and prominent member of the Union of Greens and Farmers Augusts Brigmanis: "The problem is that the coalition simply does not have the votes in the Saeima," the veteran Latvian politician acknowledged on Tuesday during a live broadcast on Latvian Radio. The politician noted the obvious: in many parliamentary committees, the ruling coalition is in the minority, and the ruling parties periodically face problems in gathering all the deputies who support the government for the plenary session of the Saeima — that is, a maximum of 51 people! A week ago, the plenary session ended prematurely because the ruling coalition had only 48 deputies in the hall, and the opposition took advantage of this by disrupting the quorum. However, the ruling parties learned no lesson and today refused to make concessions to the opposition — to withdraw two bills from the agenda as part of the so-called "green course." In response, let us remind you, the opposition disrupted the quorum, as the ruling coalition had only 46 deputies in the hall out of 51 during the vote on one of the bills of the "green course." The Speaker of the Saeima was forced to interrupt the plenary session... And although the head of the "New Unity" parliamentary faction Edmunds Jurēvics tried to put on a brave face after this, assuring that the quorum would be ensured during the adoption of the 2026 budget, it is unlikely that anyone believed him. It is obvious that a government crisis is brewing, and "New Unity," as the main ruling party, as well as the Prime Minister from this party - Evika Silina, need to decide how to move forward before the budget is considered in parliament, that is, before November... One option is to negotiate with the opposition, making some concessions and compromises, thus at least guaranteeing that the quorum will not be disrupted again. The second option is to negotiate with the coalition partners about strict coalition discipline during the consideration of the budget and budget package. In this case, the coalition partners really need to temporarily "forget" all their disagreements. But it seems that the Prime Minister has neither the opportunity nor the strength for either option, let alone the second. In this situation, political scientist Janis Ikstens is probably right, who has essentially recommended to Evika Silina, in the context of the ongoing government crisis, to... resign herself and thus end the suffering. Such a scenario is becoming more and more real...
