Both Fish and Meat - Riga Residents Debate Changes at the Central Market

After the closure of the Meat Pavilion of the Riga Central Market, sellers were temporarily relocated to the Fish and Gastronomic Pavilions. Some customers call this the best decision in recent years, while others are outraged by the proximity of meat and fish, writes Otkrito.lv.

After the closure of the Meat Pavilion, some traders were relocated to the Gastronomic and Fish Pavilions, where customers can already purchase fresh meat, smoked products, and other meat items. While market representatives note that work on creating new trading places continues almost continuously, both positive and critical feedback about the merging of meat and fish sellers in one pavilion is appearing on social media.

It was previously reported that out of 33 meat traders, 17 entrepreneurs are already operating in the new trading places, while specific solutions are being offered and implemented for the others to restore meat product sales in full in the near future.

Currently, technical work is ongoing to relocate refrigerated displays and create new trading places in the Fish Pavilion. Employees of Rīgas nami, workers of the Riga Central Market, as well as hired specialists have been working almost around the clock for several days to quickly provide additional trading places for meat sellers. In addition to creating new places in the pavilions, traders will also be provided with mobile trading points in the open area of the Riga Central Market, so that as many entrepreneurs as possible can promptly resume operations.

Sergey particularly positively assessed the changes, writing on the social network X that the merging of meat and fish trading has become "the best thing that has happened to the Riga Central Market in recent years." He noted that sellers are adapting to the new conditions, customers are looking for their favorite traders, and there is a pleasant buzz in the market. "It’s a pleasure to shop," he concluded, adding that it would be worth bringing back vegetable trading under the roof to make shopping more convenient in bad weather.

However, not everyone perceives this decision so positively. Some Latvians are ironic about the proximity of meat and fish, questioning whether such placement raises sanitary or even kosher issues.

Other commentators are much more critical. Many note that the smell of fish next to meat does not attract them, and some believe that it would be more logical to place meat traders where clothing and souvenirs are currently sold. "I don’t understand why meat couldn’t be placed where the rags and matryoshkas are," wrote one user.

Discussions also include complaints about the overall direction of market development, logistics, and parking, as well as questions about why the technical problems of the Meat Pavilion were not resolved in a timely manner. Some users believe that the Central Market would suffice with even one fully equipped pavilion, while others call for more consideration of customer convenience and the working conditions of traders.

As is known, due to poor technical condition and safety considerations, the Meat Pavilion of the Riga Central Market has been closed to visitors since June 11.
